Week 2

Intent: To investigate the use of visual metaphor to communicate complex emotional responses

Content: Article about Indonesian couple

Reference point: 'The Arrival' by Shaun Tan

'The Arrival' Shaun Tan

Analysis: The Arrival accentuates the feelings of alienation for the character by having no recognisable places icons or language. The landscape is strange and unusual as it would appear to a foreigner. This could all be exaggerated in the characters head because it is a shock of him moving to this new place and leaving his family behind.
In this way the surrealism is a representation of emotion. It helps to express the shock and confusion. The bird figure with an egg could represent the feeling of home that he left it is lost amidst a mass of strange shapes and letters.

The shock and emotion of the Indonesian couple when there children were taken away by the tsunami can also be expressed using surreal metaphor. I like the idea of having birds being a symbol for family so I combined the parents into a bird like creature reaching out for their child as an anthropomorphic wave snatches them away.
I would take this further and create more of a surreal landscape around it to reference Shaun Tan's work and then focus on their expressions to communicate the emotional trauma.
